Onyx is one of the most common and useful stones on the planet. It is named from a Greek myth in which Cupid cut Aphrodite’s nails one day then threw the pairings into the Indus River, where they became onyx--the Grecian word for “fingernail”. A cooling stone, in ancient Egypt and india it was believed that wearing onyx around the neck would cool the ardour of love, but if worn too long, it caused lovers to split. The stone has a long history of use in protective charms and in medieval times it was believed that onyx could heal animal bites when applied to these wounds.
Onyx is a very earthy stone and has planetary ruler Saturn. It is often used for solving matters that require solidity and determination. It is said to help to self motivate by help realise your goals and to bring form to thoughts. It has also been associated with the Root Chakra.
It is said that onyx absorbs negativity and can thusly used for protection and to promote a positive, friendly atmosphere. There is widespread belief in many diverse cultures that onyx should not be worn during sleep as it is thought to produce bad dreams, possibly due to its association with absorbing negativity.
